8:00 departure for a 3-hour drive to Sawai Madhopur India home of the Tigers and a huge national reserve.

  • I have failed to mention previously when India became a democratic republic in 1952 among the many laws passed, driving regulations and an extensive set of guidelines for the road were required. What I have learned is that NO ONE FOLLOWS them. I.E.
  • At any point in time you can find:
  • 50 mph divided highway someone driving or riding in the wrong direction on the wrong side of the road.
  • Two lane roads with our driver straddling the center line with 3 motorbikes on our left and a car on our right, with a motorbike passing the car on the right.
  •  We arrive at the Oberoi Vanyavillas and as usual over the top. An elephant at the entrance was being fed and having a pedicure. She was quite a friendly girl as Sheron was able to hug his trunk.
  • Our room was the best so far and it is a tent with our own 360-degree walled courtyard.
  • Then a 3 ½ hour jeep ride, which I swear could have been done in ½ hour to drive where the tigers hang out.
  • The roughest gravel/rocky, rutted road we have driven on, is way tougher on the body than anything we have done in Africa. Too much for 80 years olds.
  • And to top it off No tigers, lots of deer, monkeys, and a crocodile.
  • Just before leaving the park, there was a huge traffic jam all caused by the sighting of 3 leopards about ½ mile away. You need a high-powered telephoto lens, or binoculars to even see them. If this is what to expect for a tiger sighting we decided to pass on the next 2  3 ½ hr sessions on Thursday the 18th.
